Module summary

Students will critically explore the UK physical activity (p.a.) and exercise industries. The module will explore current policies, strategies, and the challenges for professionalisation in p.a. and exercise. This will develop a deeper understanding of experiences of participation and critical skills through looking at this industry, its professional development, and the role it plays in government strategies. This module will provide an opportunity for understanding the professional sector students may seek employment in.

Objectives

The module aims to provide students with a deeper understanding of the exercise professions through theoretical learning and critical analysis.

The module will focus on a range of professional and theoretical topics namely:

- The historical development of the UK p.a. and exercise industry
- The contemporary structure and nature of the exercise professions and industry within the UK.
- The nature of key p.a. and exercise organisations and their relation to UK government health agendas
- The current key challenges facing exercise professionals
- The emerging future challenges for the exercise professions and their professionals

Learning outcomes

- Discuss and analyse the contemporary exercise industry structure.
- Critically discuss the differentiation between physical activity, sport, and exercise strategies and policies
- Apply evidence-based knowledge to critically discuss the role of exercise professionals in meeting national health agendas.
- Critically evaluate the methodologies used to develop and create exercise professionals in the UK.
- Construct an action plan designed to develop personal skills and attributes linked to the students future aspirations in the exercise industry.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Throughout seminars the session lead will plan activities and challenges that present formative feedback opportunities.
These will include strategies such as;

- Presentation of findings
- One to one discussions in supervisions
