The objectives of this module are:
- to develop a workable research question;
- to undertake a relevant literature search;
- to plan research and a coherent and logical essay structure;
- to write a substantial essay displaying critical analysis.
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- demonstrate the development of a deeper understanding of a particular legal topic through independent research and the preparation of an extended piece of writing;
- practice research skills, including the skills of accessing and retrieving relevant information, analysing and criticising information and presenting and communicating effectively the product of independent research;
- formulate a focused and workable research question;
- undertake sustained independent research relevant to their research question;
- demonstrate, through the writing of their dissertation, a critical awareness and understanding of the position and role of law within one or more of its social, economic, political, policy, historical, philosophical, moral, ethical or cultural contexts.
The module involves the writing of a dissertation on a selected legal topic of no more than 8,000 words (excluding bibliography and footnotes), plus a 250 word abstract.
Students are required to select a general topic in the September of their final year, after which the course co-ordinator will allocate the student to a supervisor.
The completed dissertation must be submitted on a date (TBC) in the May of the student's third year.
