Module summary

This module provides students with an introduction to English law of Tort law, a fundamental component of the private law of obligations. It covers a wide range of key legal principles governing the civil rights and protections that exist, as well as some of the policy justifications and influences that underpin them.

Objectives

The module aims to introduce students to the key legal rules in English Tort law and discuss how the law is applied with proper reference to both case law and statutes. The knowledge will ensure the students understand the operation of Tort law in legal practice.

The learning activities are designed to explain and discuss the key legal principles in English Tort law and help students to develop the skill of applying the law to practical problems.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

Explain and analyse legal principles and rules, showing how they are applied in different Tort law contexts

Apply legal reasoning to develop an explanation of a complex Tort law issue

Use legal authorities to formulate responses to actual and hypothetical problems relating to Tort law

Use a variety of communication methods to present complex legal information effectively

Skills outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

Adapt communication styles to suit different audiences;

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A formal formative assessment opportunity will be provided for the summative assessment task, which is specifically pedagogically aligned to that task. As part of this, each student will receive feedback designed to support the development of knowledge and skills that will be later assessed in the summative task.
