Module summary

This module will introduce you to core criminal law concepts and to the criminal justice system within which the criminal law is applied. This module will provide you with the opportunity to learn about key criminal law principles, cases and legislation, and to recognise the different political and cultural contexts in which criminal law operates at both a national and an international level.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

Explain and analyse legal concepts, values, principles, and rules of criminal law, showing how they are applied in different legal contexts.

Apply legal reasoning to develop an explanation of a complex legal issue relating to criminal law.

Evaluate the effects of specific criminal laws on addressing current issues in relation to the operation of the criminal law and system and their relationship to relevant social, cultural and political contexts.

Identify the significance of legal concepts, values, principles, and rules of criminal law within broader cultural and societal debates.

Skills outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

Apply critical thinking to analyse complex legal issues, demonstrating creativity in problem-solving.

Employ various research methods to conduct independent legal research, integrating different sources.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A formal formative assessment opportunity will be provided, which is specifically pedagogically aligned to the summative assessment. As part of this, each student will receive feedback designed to support the development of knowledge and skills that will be later assessed in the summative task.
