Module summary

This module will introduce students to the underlying principles and major sources of UK Constitutional Law. In addition, students will learn about two fields of relevant public law: the law relating to police powers and public order, and the English law relating to judicial review.

Objectives

- To provide a general understanding of the principles of UK Constitutional Law and the relationship between legal and political elements of the constitution.
- To acquire knowledge of the UK’s institutions of government and how they interact with each other.
- To develop critical and legal analytical skills in relation to the UK Constitution.
- To develop a basic understanding of the concept of judicial review and the grounds and procedures for it.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1- Identify and describe principles and legal rules relating to UK Constitutional and Administrative Law;
2- Identify and summarise legal and non-legal information about the UK Constitution to provide a basic insight into its operation, and its relationship to relevant social and political contexts;
3- Identify and discuss contentious legal and political issues in constitutional law

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1- Communicate clearly and effectively, using technical legal terminology appropriately
2- Participate in group work, demonstrating collaborative skills and respect for diverse viewpoints

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A formal formative assessment opportunity will be provided, which is specifically pedagogically aligned to the summative assessment. As part of this, each student will receive feedback designed to support the development of knowledge and skills that will be later assessed in the summative task.
