Module summary

The module offers an introduction to the study of law and the English legal system. It introduces some of the core areas of law, including contract law, tort law, public law and criminal law. This knowledge will be applied to current legal issues in this area.

Objectives

The purpose of this module is to provide students with an introduction to the study of law, acquire basic legal knowledge of the core areas of law and enable students to see the breadth of issues impacted by law. The module aims to provide students with a critical understanding of the law and its role in society.

The learning activities are designed to prepare students to think critically and to be confident in communicating their views on current legal issues. The module will provide students with the opportunity to develop the skills of problem-solving, reflection and independent study as well as support students in developing the skills of researching the law and applying the law to practical problems.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1- Explain and discuss the operation of the law, legal institutions and procedures of English law
2- Discuss an aspect of contract law, tort law, public law or criminal law and how it applies to current issues
3- Utilise appropriate legal terminology and reasoning to produce a coherent legal account of issues within the legal system

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

1- The ability to extract relevant legal issues from a case or scenario and identify solutions
2- Use legal databases to search for cases and synthesise research materials

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A formal formative assessment opportunity will be provided, which is specifically pedagogically aligned to the summative assessment. As part of this, each student will receive feedback designed to support the development of knowledge and skills that will be later assessed in the summative task.
