ITAL2016 Italian Language B
This module is approved as a discovery module
This module aims to take students from about A2+ level to B1/B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The core textbook will help students develop a strong foundation in Italian grammar, vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions at that level. Language classes will offer opportunities to communicate effectively in Italian, both in writing and orally, navigating diverse real-world situations. By engaging with authentic materials and real-life scenarios, students will gain a deeper understanding of Italian culture and customs. Furthermore, this module empowers students to take initiative in their language learning through regular use of flipped learning, self-directed study and research. This module is not suitable for students whose level of competence in Italian is CEFR B1 equivalent or beyond. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
The module aims to:
- Enable students to develop language awareness, skills and competences in Italian, up to about CEFR B1/B2 level, across a variety of contexts.
- Interact effectively in Italian with native or other competent speakers at about CEFR Level B1/B2 in Italian.
- Further develop students’ cultural competency in relation to the areas where Italian is spoken.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate a command of Italian grammar, idiomatic expressions, and vocabulary at CEFR Level B1/B2.
2. Comprehend a broad range of real-life written, audio, and visual material in Italian, with speed and detail.
3. Communicate and interact in Italian up to CEFR Level B1/B2, handling most situations encountered while travelling in areas where Italian is spoken.
4. Produce short specialist text types such as informative, persuasive, creative, and promotional texts in Italian up to CEFR Level B1/B2.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Develop a deeper understanding of culture and customs other than one’s own.
6. Demonstrate taking the initiative in planning and undertaking language learning activities, such as self-directed study and research, using a variety of sources in a foreign language.
Details of the syllabus will be provided on the Minerva organisation (or equivalent) for the module

Regular progress will be monitored by students’ engagement with formative activities (such as written texts, videos, audio-recordings or short discussion posts) set on Minerva, ahead of each class, throughout the module, privileging a flipped learning approach. Students will receive regular formative feedback (individual, peer or collective) on exercises and tasks that they choose to complete: as part of their weekly practical language classes; as consolidation of CEFR Level B1/B2 in Italian; as preparation and scaffolding for the assessment; and to further encourage autonomous learning. Students will also receive regular individual and collective feedback on their oral language production in Italian, mainly focusing on pronunciation, fluidity, and accuracy; this will help boost their confidence in Italian and prepare them for their oral exam and real-world language use.
