This module allows students the opportunity to study abroad for a year at a host University approved by the School of History. Students may select preferred institutions and countries after liaising with the module convenor for the year abroad. The module provides students with an excellent opportunity to sample a different academic community as well as experiencing the social and cultural differences of the host city and country.
On completion of this module, students will have broadened their knowledge of specialist subject areas in History and gained experience of living and studying within a different social and cultural environment.
The actual experience of the year abroad will vary widely from one student to another, dependent on the University attended and the individual host city and country.
- Qualities and transferable skills necessary for working in another academic system and living in another country.
- Enhanced practical language skills, both written and oral, in some cases in a language other than English, as required by demands of study in another country.
This will be arranged on an individual basis, in consultation with the host institution. It will normally comprise a combination of taught courses in History (66%), related studies and, in the case of European placements, language training if required (33%).

By arrangement and agreement with student, host institution and home supervisor.
The exchange year will be monitored by a tutor/supervisor within the host University to ensure that it is a rewarding and worthwhile experience for the student. The Study Abroad Coordinator in History monitors progress overall through regular email contact.
Assessment for this module is on a pass / fail basis and will be performed by the School of History, once the student has returned from overseas, on the evidence of the transcripts received from the host university. If necessary, interviews will be held.
Students must therefore, while abroad, attend classes, complete assessed work, and sit examinations in all modules for which they are enrolled, in accordance with the assessment methods in use at the host institution, from which they must bring back transcripts of their performance in all modules taken.
