This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module provides you with an opportunity to develop your research interests by writing a supervised long essay on a topic of your choice.
This module builds on skills developed by IHP students in core modules by providing them with an opportunity to conduct in-depth research on a chosen topic supported by a supervisor. You will have the opportunity to formulate your own interests and questions as historians, to work independently on your chosen area to identify key scholarship and topics of debate, and to formulate your own opinions about it and express them in a longer piece of writing. These skills will be very important in helping prepare you for your Final Year Project. An introductory lecture provides key information, and three workshops cover key skills like project management, writing and editing. You will each be assigned an academic supervisor who will offer specialist advice to guide the project in one-on-one meetings.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Define and research a complex historical problem.
2. Critically assess historiography on the topic as well as its context.
3. Articulate arguments supported by historical evidence and positioned within the historiography.
