This is the final theory/practice module in the programme. The balance here moves markedly towards the practice elements of the programme where students further hone their skills, develop confidence and prepare for qualification and registration. The theoretical focus is on students honing their skills, develop confidence and prepare for qualification and registration. Through seminars and tutorials students will apply critical thought to how maternity services are delivered, their quality, the views of service users and wider critiques of public health policy and practices. This will develop their abilities as leaders and managers to prepare them for practice. In the clinical areas' students will, under more indirect supervision, work in partnership with women and other members of the multi-professional team in the provision of care. An emphasis will be on case loading and continuity of care.
This is a 40 credit module which includes 600 hours of practice. In this module the focus is on midwifery clinical practice and preparing students for the transition to post registration practice.
On completion of this module students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate effective management, supervision, and leadership skills in relation to decision making and skilled midwifery care delivery.
2. Demonstrate the ability to work in and across a range of health and social care settings and with other health and social care staff to promote continuity of care and carer.
3. Demonstrate successful completion of NMC proficiencies within the six domains (NMC 2019) along with health and good character for entry to the register.
4. Understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies in providing skilled, knowledgeable, respectful, and compassionate care for women, Newborn infants and their families.
5. Critically review current and future context of public health and maternity services.
6. Analytically review partnership working, professional and autonomous practice
7. Critically explore effective improvement strategies for quality and safety
8. Demonstrate the ability and commitment to develop as a midwife, understanding the responsibility for ongoing education and professional development.

Applied Practice:
- In this module there are 600 hours of clinical practice. Students will gain exposure to the care of women and babies within a maternity unit setting and with community midwifery teams.
- In the midwifery placements students and their mentors will identify a caseload of women and take a lead in their care

Guided study in preparation for VIVA and completion of eMORA
Enquiry Based Learning (EBL) will be used to formatively assess student knowledge, understanding and ability to critically review the current and future context of public health and maternity services. Starting with a 'scenario' and with the guidance of a facilitator, learning will be driven by a process of enquiry owned by the student as they will identify their own questions and will then examine the resources, they need to research the topic, thereby acquiring the requisite knowledge. The viva voce will be held with a midwifery lecturer and (where available) an appropriately experienced clinician and take the format of semi structured questions focussing on the evidence underpinning responses to a clinical scenario. Viva lasts 20 minutes. Scenarios are provided 6 weeks beforehand for preparation. Where a clinician is not available an additional member of academic staff will be present. The viva is audio recorded for review by the external examiner and for moderation purposes. There is no compensation between the viva and eMORA / grading of clinical practice.
