Module summary

The module provides the opportunity for students to undertake a piece of independent research and writing on a topic of their choosing. It further develops their skills in research design, data collection and analysis, literature searching and reviewing, and academic writing.

Objectives

Through undertaking a dissertation, students will:

- Develop a research project
- Undertake an independent piece of original research, analysis and writing
- Manage their own time and project to suit their needs and research programme
- Successfully apply advanced techniques from across their degree programmes to their research
- Demonstrate that they can produce a highly professional piece of work suitable for external review.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

SSLO1: Plan and design a piece of original geographical research.
SSLO2: Apply an advanced range of quantitative, laboratory, visualisation, geospatial, numerical, field, or computational skills as appropriate for the research.
SSLO3: Collect, interpret, and synthesise different types of quantitative primary and/or secondary data.
SSLO4: Communicate effectively the findings of the original research.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Verbal feedback is given to students through supervisions and from lab staff during lab work. The interim reports are an opportunity to give written feedback. The first interim report provides formative feedback on the project design and is PFP. The second interim reports provides an opportunity to review data collected and guide the data analysis and writing up process.
