Module summary

This module will consolidate the students’ knowledge of French language and culture and extending this into a professional context, possibly related to their field of study. They will work with authentic materials from different written and audio-visual sources and develop interactive skills. They will gain familiarity with French business practice including how to produce curriculum vitae, application and other business documents relevant to professional contexts in the French speaking world. They will practise work-related communication skills such as presentations and business telephone calls. They will research and select materials related to their field of study or career aspirations. Topics range from professional social media, tourism, company profiles and documentation to job application and interview techniques. The emphasis is on achieving practical communication in the four main language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to offer progression from A-Level + 1 to A- Level + 2 (University level 2/ CEFR C1) in the four skills, with an emphasis on communication within a Business or Professional French context, linked, where appropriate to the student’s field of study.

Building on the language skills achieved in Level 1 FREN or B2 for other students, the principal objectives of this Level 2 course are:- to enhance written skills and consolidate knowledge and mastery of French vocabulary related to the world of work / business in Francophone countries;- to introduce students to the mastery of business style written French through the study of style, register, text-types and, amongst other exercises, the regular practice of writing reports and emails related to business, as well as the regular speaking practice through interviews and Presentation;- to provide students with a practical, business-orientated preparation for their residence abroad or working abroad after their studies.

Tasks will be set to ensure opportunities to practise linguistic competence in a professional context.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

LO1. understand a wide range of professional and specialised uses of French from their field of study
LO2. express themselves accurately in written French using idioms, expressions and a wide range of registers as appropriate to a professional context;
LO3. present and defend their point of view orally with ease in a professional context in French, including in a job interview;
LO4. Achieve level of written skills needed to find employment in the French-speaking world, for use from job applications to CVs.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Weekly formative feedback through homework in the form of short, concrete tasks to complete at home and submitted in their folder.

Undertake independent research and present their findings in individual or group presentations.

Weekly preparation on topical business news will enhance research skills and self-expression in the target language. These activities will prepare students for the summative assessment by giving them opportunities to practice before the formal marked assessment.
