Module summary

This is the first-year language module for the post-A level route on degree programmes in French. Language learning on this module has a strong grammatical focus and practices all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- consolidate and further develop students’ language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing,
- establish a good grasp of basic and advanced grammar and structures,
- broaden students’ general and topic-specific vocabulary
- develop students’ skills to analyse the usage of language in different contexts and registers, enhancing students’ language awareness
- engage students with authentic French-language materials and topics relevant to life in French-speaking cultures

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

1. Understand the main ideas of complex written texts in the target language on both concrete and abstract topics
2. Produce different types of written texts in a variety of contexts, in a clear and purposeful manner with a level of accuracy that allows successful communication with readers
3. Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes communication with other speakers possible without significant strain for either party
4. Identify and discuss social norms in different contexts where the target language is used, demonstrating intercultural competence
5. Communicate clearly and effectively, adapting their communication strategy to the intended audience and communicative context

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Regular progress will be monitored through students’ engagement with formative activities set on Minerva or through a textbook ahead of each class. Students will receive formative feedback throughout the module to consolidate their learning, prepare for assessments, and encourage autonomous language development.
