Module summary

This module enables students to carry out a research project within a subject specialism within the School.

Objectives

The application of fundamental scientific principles to solve problems in food and nutrition research.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students will have:
1- completed a laboratory research project or a computer based research project or a survey based project;
2- gained experience in the collation, analysis and presentation of scientific data, including the use of computer packages;
3- prepared and submitted a research paper, in a scientifically acceptable format;
4- developed skills in the appropriate and selective use of library resources, including computer based search tools including online databases such as ISI Web of knowledge, Medline and PubMed;
5- the competence to read critically a scientific paper and to identify the key features of the study;
6- the competence to interpret data presented in scientific papers and to assess them critically in order to draw appropriate conclusions;
7- gained an understanding of a broad range of subject areas in food science, food chemistry or in nutrition.

Syllabus

The application of fundamental scientific principles to solve problems in food or nutrition research. Students will be given a choice of research topics relevant to the research activity of the School and, in some cases, suggested by industrial companies.

Private study

Library-based literature review and supervised laboratory-based individual experimental research project followed by data analysis, written research paper and presentation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Feedback will be provided during training and tutorials with supervisor as well as in the laboratory, but it may also come from other laboratory personnel including laboratory technicians, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Project design and protocol preparation will be discussed within meetings and tutorials with supervisor, data analysis, presentation and report will also receive feedback from the supervisor before submission.
