Module summary

In this module, you will take a closer look at current understanding of the relationships between diet and health by exploring applications of different dietary approaches to the prevention and management of specific diseases. Thematic areas that may typically be covered include gut health, cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular health.

Objectives

The module aims to:
1. Review the role of diet in the pathogenesis and management of specific diseases and/or conditions, e.g., diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, including current evidence for specific sub-groups, e.g., children, elderly, ethnic minorities.
2. Highlight the importance of wider determinants of health, e.g., religious and cultural beliefs, socio-economic factors, in shaping and influencing relationship between populations and individuals’ diet and disease outcomes.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module you will:
SSLO1: Critically evaluate scientific evidence on the role of diet in human health and disease and communicate findings effectively to targeted audiences.

SSLO2: Critically reflect on how acquired knowledge has influenced personal and academic perspectives and evaluate its implications for professional practice, e.g., within the scope of an AfN Associate Registered Nutritionist.

Skills outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have developed:
SKLO1: Technical skills: subject-specific knowledge, e.g., applications of diet in preventing and managing disease.
SKLO2: Academic skills: critical thinking, academic writing, reflection.
SKLO3: Work ready skills: communication, critical thinking, research, reflection.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will have opportunities to obtain formative feedback during class lectures, seminar and/or workshop and coursework assessment clinics. Furthermore, a class Padlet, moderated by the Module Leader, will be made available for purposes of collaborative learning outside of classroom. Where applicable, general feedback will be posted on Minerva, accessible to all students on the module.
