Students must: 1. Have passed level 2 2. Have secured a placement (or placements) 3. Attended pre-placement briefings and completed appropriate documentation before they can be confirmed on the Work Placement Year

Module summary

This module provides you with an opportunity to immerse yourself in a workplace context in order to develop and extend your skills and apply your knowledge in external contexts. You will undertake a minimum of nine months to a maximum of twelve months work placement/s. Each placement must be a minimum of three months. A maximum of 2 placements is permitted.  The placement/s will be agreed by you, the School Work Placement Tutor and the Workplace Supervisor prior to the commencement of the placement and will address the module objectives. During the placement/s you will produce a portfolio of tasks evaluating and evidencing your skills development. When you return to university you will give a presentation which will explore the skills and knowledge gained during the placement. 

Objectives

This module provides you with a structured and supported work experience which relates to your future goals and will involve you working for an organisation for the duration of at least nine months. This experience will enable you to develop and enhance your transferable skills and awareness of workplace environments. The module will support you to reflect on your personal skills development and your ability to work in external contexts and with external partners.

On successful completion of the module you will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Demonstrate understanding of the ways in which work contexts function and operate.
2. Describe and evaluate the value of your contributions to the workplace.
3. Critically evaluated how your skills and knowledge apply in a professional context and consider how your work placement experiences can benefit your academic performance.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Pre-placement: students attend relevant presentations and meet with the School Work Placement Tutor, Professional Services staff and/or the Personal Tutor as appropriate.
- On-placement: students will have regular remote contact with a Work Placement Tutor and more regular support from the Workplace Supervisor. A Work Placement Tutor or their nominee will conduct an online or in-person visit at least once during the first half of the placement (visits to overseas placements may not be possible and will be replaced with regular online conversations). The Work Placement Tutor will also conduct a visit during the second half of the visit.
- The Personal Tutor will offer ‘return to study’ support towards the end of the placement year, usually alongside the programme leaders or DSE, and will be available remotely as necessary during the placement year.
