This module is approved as a discovery module
This interdisciplinary module combines cultural and literary studies with creative writing, using feminist cultural production that focuses on migration, transnationalism, and cultural memory as a case study. A key emphasis is placed on the experiential dimension of learning, encouraging students to engage actively with feminist methodologies through theoretical and practice-based approaches. The module promotes critical thinking, creative expression, and cross-cultural dialogue through an immersive and practice-oriented learning experience. Students will gain practical insights into the creative process and confidence in their own creative expression. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
This module deepens students’ understanding of transnational feminist thought and its intersections with creative practice. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining literary and cultural analysis with creative writing, students explore themes of migration, cultural memory, and self-discovery within feminist frameworks. Objectives include fostering critical engagement with feminist methodologies such as ‘knowing through doing’ and self-narration and encouraging reflection on how these approaches inform both theory and creative expression. By situating practice as a form of knowledge, the module cultivates awareness of the relational and contextual dimensions of feminist thought, enabling students to interrogate identity, belonging, and becoming in transnational contexts.
Learning activities are designed to integrate theory and practice in an experiential format that promotes active participation and collaborative dialogue. Weekly workshops combine interactive lectures with student-led seminars, creating a dynamic environment where students can deepen their understanding of feminist concepts and apply them to their own creative and critical work. Students will be encouraged to draw on their disciplinary backgrounds and personal perspectives, enriching discussions and fostering cross-cultural exchange. This structure ensures that the module’s objectives—critical thinking, creative practice, and transnational awareness—are achieved through immersive, practice-oriented learning.
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Appraise transnational feminist theories and cultural texts, demonstrating critical understanding of concepts such as mobile identities, cultural memory, and transformational becoming.
2. Critically apply feminist methodologies to produce creative and critical work that reflects relational and contextual knowledge.
3. Articulate their own positionality and creative voice within transnational feminist frameworks through reflective and practice-based assignments.
4. Communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively i adapting style for both academic and creative contexts.
5. Critically reflect on learning processes and creative practice to identify strengths, areas for development, and strategies for improvement.
6. Locate, interpret, and synthesise relevant scholarly and creative resources

Students will receive formative feedback throughout the module to support their learning and development. A dedicated one-to-one session with the tutor will provide an opportunity to discuss and plan the final project, offering tailored guidance on approach, structure, and alignment with module objectives.
In addition, oral feedback will be given during weekly workshops by both lecturers and peers, enabling students to refine ideas, respond to constructive critique, and develop confidence in their creative and critical work. These interactive sessions foster a collaborative learning environment and encourage continuous improvement.
