Module summary

This module introduces you to the cultural expectations and learning approaches within various arts and humanities disciplines in the UK context. You will work alongside students from diverse backgrounds, reflecting on your own educational experiences and how they shape your learning journey at Leeds. By exploring different conceptions of learning and their connection to individual and social well-being, you will deepen your understanding of your role as both an individual and a global citizen.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to prepare you for undergraduate study across a range of arts and humanities subjects. You will learn how cultural expectations within different arts and humanities disciplines relate to your own educational journey; how various conceptions of learning connect to ideas of individual and social well-being; and how applying multiple disciplinary perspectives can enrich your understanding of complex topics. You will also develop your ability to communicate ideas effectively to diverse audiences, both orally and in writing, while refining your critical thinking and reflective writing skills.

Lectures provide a foundation for key module aims: understanding the cultural context of learning in the UK and examining the learning experiences you bring with you.

Discussion-based seminars enable you to apply your understanding of cultural and disciplinary perspectives to explore complex questions and reflect on the ways in which human beings learn.

These complementary teaching approaches support two additional aims: enhancing your capacity to analyse topics through the lens of multiple disciplines and developing your own voice in communicating ideas to diverse audiences.

Through active participation in lectures, seminars, and independent study, you will strengthen your ability to adapt your communication style to different contexts and audiences, preparing you for the challenges and expectations of undergraduate study in the arts and humanities.

Students are asked to read and reflect on (i) the PRHS marking criteria and (ii) the specific guidance provided on the reflective log summative assessment and identify for themselves the form of formative feedback that will be most beneficial to them.

For the Semester 2 assessments (Presentation and Essay), students are invited to complete one piece of formative work in the form of an essay plan and can attend individual consultation on their presentation.
