This module introduces students to the latest critical approaches and thought in the discipline. Drawing on a variety of local and national cinemas, the modules looks at, and aims to develop your understanding of, current debates that are being developed by researches in the field. A team-taught module, you will benefit from the expertise of a range of staff.
This module is structured around sessions which allow learners to apply contemporary film theory learnt in lectures to a range of tasks such as literature review and essay. These tasks build across the semester to add in new elements as work progresses and provide an opportunity to identify areas of current research with a range of approaches.
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
LO1 Critically and creatively evaluate complex issues, debates, research, and advanced scholarship within the discipline of film studies
LO2. Conduct advanced film analysis using a methodological approach in film studies, using complex technically terminology
LO3. Plan and develop an independent research project that uses advanced research methodologies
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
• conduct advanced independent research pertaining to the issues raised by the module
• conduct in-depth analysis of one or more films in relation to broader conceptual issues
• make use of technical film vocabulary
• develop their own research-based knowledge about world cinemas

Student progress will be monitored on a regular basis via classroom participation and monitored group discussion. Formative feedback will be provided to students after the submission of first assessment (literature review) to support reflection and future improvement. The feedback will focus on enhancing critical analysis, coherence and structure and academic writing skills. Formative feedback will be used to inform student’s approach to future assessment (essay)and their ongoing academic development.
