Performance Writing is for students who are curious about how writing performs in relation to different pressures and parameters. We will explore how cultural contexts, multiple disciplines, and a range of media change how writing-as-performance might be understood. We will examine performance writing on the page, screen, stage, and site, considering both how writing may be performed, as well as how it might itself be or become performance. This might include thinking about textual installation, digital texts, living texts, or performed writing processes. This module is for students interested in bringing their own creative practice to this module, developing creative work that is contextualised by a deeper understanding of contemporary modes of performance writing. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
This workshop-based module will draw on key theorists and practitioners to develop students’ understanding of contemporary modes of writing, publishing, and performing on page, screen, stage, and site; and the social, political and historical factors that have informed the development of these experimental modes of writing.
Students will be supported to explore these ideas in practice, and to develop their own area of interest by examining the relationship between this field and their own creative interests.
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
LO1: Analyse and apply the defining characteristics, rules, and conventions of a chosen creative genre to produce original writing.
LO2: Critically evaluate and reflect on the creative process by seeking feedback and situating their work within relevant literary, cultural, and socio-historical contexts.
LO3: Develop and implement research strategies to locate, assess, and integrate appropriate scholarship and resources into their writing practice.
SLO1: Creating original work through organisation, self-motivation, and meeting deadlines (Work Ready)
SLO2: Locate, evaluate, and integrate relevant information sources to enhance creative output and support independent research (Academic)
SLO3: Interpret, synthesize, and critically apply ideas and evidence to construct structured, coherent arguments and justify creative choices (Work Ready)
