Module summary

The module gives students the opportunity to develop practical, multi-format writing skills across genres relevant to journalism, publishing, advertising, and digital media. The module combines traditional literary and academic skills with hands-on experience in creating blogs, newsletters, multimedia content, social media posts, and AI-assisted writing projects. By the end of the module, students will build a portfolio of multifaceted digital work and develop the critical and creative skills needed to thrive in the modern media and AI-enhanced workplace. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.

Objectives

The module aims to develop students’ practical skills in researching, writing, and editing digital content across blogs, newsletters, social media, websites, and multimedia platforms, drawing on topics inspired by their degree subject(s). Students will learn how to engage audiences effectively and tailor content for different digital formats, while building critical thinking and research skills, including source evaluation, fact-checking, and ethical decision-making. The module includes interactive practical sessions enabling the experience in using AI tools to support content creation, helping students maintain originality, accuracy, and cultural awareness. Students will create multimedia content that combines text, images, video, audio, and interactive storytelling, while strengthening editorial skills such as grammar, style, and adherence to professional conventions. Reflective practice is encouraged throughout, allowing students to critically evaluate their writing and editing choices to maximize audience impact.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
