Module summary

This content-based pre-sessional will develop your language skills, knowledge and understanding in the field of Business. Taught in partnership with academics from the Language Centre and LUBS, you will study subject-specific content to enable you to develop your language competence and ability to communicate at an appropriate academic level. This module is based around a specific business topic and you will work on understanding this content and the language used through a series of lectures, core texts, language classes and seminars. You will have the chance to work both individually and with others.

Objectives

This module aims to provide you with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate your linguistic and literacy skills to a level that will enable you to communicate competently within your discipline specific academic context at post-graduate level and to meet the language requirements of your future academic programme. You will also develop an awareness and understanding of the culture, context and discourse of academic study in the field of Business. Finally, you will develop as autonomous, reflective learners, with a cultural awareness and understanding of ethical academic practices.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Recognise and apply knowledge of English academic literacy (including verbal and visual), language and skills required in your programme.

2. Demonstrate audience and discourse awareness, including of typical genres in the business disciplines.

3. Display awareness of ethical academic practices, including in relation to the use of Gen AI.

4. Use English to communicate competently within your subject-specific fields.

5. Apply appropriate academic integrity conventions and practices within your own studies.

6. Employ effective strategies to approach your academic studies in English.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress will be monitored through:-

1. Feedback on weekly formative tasks throughout the module.

2. In class informal observation by teachers on students use of language and level of engagement.

3. Consultations/tutorials throughout the module.

4. Submission of an essay draft.

5. A practice presentation.
