Module summary

This module is an English language content-based pre-sessional designed to help you develop the language skills, knowledge, and understanding required for postgraduate study in business-related fields. You will study subject-specific content to help you develop your language competence and ability to communicate at an appropriate academic level within your field of study. You will begin to develop facility in sourcing and analysing appropriate texts, as well as planning and organising academic work.

Objectives

This module aims to provide you with the opportunity to develop and demonstrate your linguistic and literacy skills to a level that will enable you to communicate competently within your discipline-specific academic context at postgraduate level and to meet the language requirements of your future academic programme. You will also develop an awareness and understanding of the culture, context and discourse of academic study in the field of business. Finally, you will have the opportunity to develop as autonomous, reflective learners, with a cultural awareness and understanding of ethical academic practices.

The lessons and tasks on this module will provide you with feedback and evidence to use in the following 6-week module of your programme, where you will have summative assessments.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Recognise and apply knowledge of English academic literacy (including verbal and visual), language and skills required in your programme.

2. Demonstrate audience and discourse awareness, including of typical genres in the business disciplines.

3. Display awareness of ethical academic practices, including in relation to the use of Gen AI.

Skills Learning Outcomes

4. Use English to communicate competently within your subject-specific fields.

5. Apply appropriate academic integrity conventions and practices within your own studies.

6. Employ effective strategies to approach your academic studies in English.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress will be monitored through:-

1. Checking, and formative feedback of weekly performance on tasks such as short writing tasks, presentations and seminar participation.

2. Checking, assessing and giving feedback on your progress with weekly written tasks and student reflection.

3. In class informal observation by teachers on your use of language and level of engagement.
