This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module will help you develop your understanding of healthcare professions in the UK context, and knowledge of key aspects of professionalism, values and ethics in the NHS. You will develop an awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity in the UK and how to communicate effectively in healthcare settings. You will also extend your spoken presentation and interview skills in preparation for the relevant oral assessment, such as the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).
The main objectives are to develop the language and skills required for undergraduate study on the International Foundation Year Healthcare programme and to prepare students for their interviews. This will be achieved by focussing on communication and language use in UK (healthcare) settings; reflective learning and practice; and aspects of professionalism, values and ethics in NHS healthcare professions. In addition, there will be seminars with healthcare professionals, and practice in giving presentations and interviews.
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Discuss understanding of the work of the NHS and identify different types of delivery in healthcare in the UK;
2. Recognise linguistic and cultural diversity in the UK and use language appropriate to healthcare and communication in the NHS;
3. Reflect on their own learning and awareness of resources and strategies to support development as a healthcare professional in the UK;
4. Discuss and articulate confidently the professional principles, values and ethical guidelines required of healthcare professionals in the UK.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
1. Use suitable autonomous study strategies to facilitate independent learning in their future studies; 2. Distinguish the use of written and spoken language in academic and professional contexts to suit a clear communicative purpose.
