Module summary

This module is designed for students who may be planning to work in primary school or pre-school settings, or have a general interest in the field. In each session a different element of the curriculum will be studied, with an emphasis on the pedagogies and practice most suited to working with this age group. Research evidence and learning theories will be studied alongside government documents and video evidence of classroom practice, so that you can gain a holistic understanding of the profession. During the module you will make one or more visits to schools and will develop your own learning materials. You will gain practical experience by planning and delivering a campus experience day for primary age children.

Objectives

In this module you will be introduced to approaches to teaching and learning in primary and early years settings. The module will cover curriculum, pedagogy and practice by studying professional documents, learning theories and video evidence. Inclusive practice, child protection and professional responsibility will be included. You will visit up to two settings during the module and will learn to develop learning materials for the focus age group.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module you will be able to:

1. Interpret and apply the requirements of curriculum documents
2. Identify appropriate pedagogies for children in primary and early years education
3. Develop appropriate, inclusive learning materials for children in primary and early years settings
4. Search for and select appropriate resources for different groups of learners
5. Critically reflect on different approaches to teaching and learning

Teaching Methods

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The seminars will be used for project development at three points during the semester. Students will be able to ask questions and receive feedback from tutor and peers.

Methods of Assessment

Normally resits will be assessed by the same methodology as the first attempt, unless otherwise stated
