Module summary

This module involves the preparation for and experience of placement 1. It is the first block placement and will support student’s development and training towards achieving Qualified Teacher Status. A series of preparatory seminars will begin to develop professional identity and awareness of education issues.

Objectives

Students will develop awareness of Teachers Standard part 2 ‘Personal and Professional Conduct’ and learn about the professional expectations of teachers.

Students will be introduced to factors which influence educational outcomes such as socio-economic status, gender and ethnicity.

Learning outcomes


On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

Reflect on the ways that teachers maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour within and outside school.

Discuss relevant social factors that can influence children’s attainment in school with reference to their placement context.

Demonstrate that they are making progress towards the requirements of QTS whilst on placement.

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

Reflect on placement experience

Think critically about key issues in education

Begin to develop adaptability in a professional context, showing that sometimes they can adapt to circumstances and respond ‘in the moment’.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A formal formative assessment opportunity will be provided for the summative assessment task, specifically aligned pedagogically with that task. As part of this, each student will receive feedback designed to support the development of knowledge and skills that will be assessed in the summative task through mentoring during their school placement.

Resits will be available by allowing an extended school placement if a student needs to reach the required standards. If the resit is not passed, the student will not be able to progress into Y2 and will be asked to join another undergraduate programme in the School.
