Pre-requisite qualifications

Students’ proficiency in Thai across all four language skills—reading, listening comprehension, writing, and speaking—should be equivalent to the level of competence attained upon successful completion of the module EAST2705.

Module summary

The module will be taught in Thai and involves intensive and extensive reading and discussion of a range of materials in Thai, such as TV programmes, films, historical documents, literary texts, newspaper articles and so on. Also, comprehension and composition will be practised intensively. The aim of this module is to develop students' language skills to an advanced level. Intensive training in the four language skills will enhance students’ ability to use Thai accurately, particularly in the use of vocabulary and idiom, collocation, advanced grammar and syntax, and understanding the difference between spoken and written Thai.

Objectives

Through reading, classroom discussions, presentations, and role‑plays using Thai‑language materials presented in various media—including newspaper articles, videos, and podcasts—students will advance their language proficiency. The course will also incorporate translation exercises. These activities will enable students to strengthen their Thai language skills so that they can express complex ideas accurately and elegantly in both written and spoken forms, using advanced syntax and vocabulary. The advanced language training, together with the deeper understanding of Thai society developed through this module, will further enhance students’ ability to comprehend Thai‑language materials across a wide range of media and language registers.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Communicate complex ideas fluently, effectively and appropriately in both oral and written form in the Thai language
2. Critically analyse a variety of complex texts in the Thai language, such as newspapers, books, documents or other written materials
3. Employ a diverse, advanced, technical vocabulary to engage in sophisticated discussions in the Thai language on a broad variety of topics
4. Appraise the multifaceted dimensions of Thai society from a domestic and international perspective
5. Critically reflect on intercultural dynamics by analysing, evaluating, and interpreting diverse cultural perspectives and contexts
6. Integrate and synthesize creatively complex information and ideas from a range of sources

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive individualized formative feedback on their academic understanding and progress during scheduled module contact hours. Formative feedback will be provided in both written and oral formats on in-course assignments and homework tasks. Ongoing monitoring and feedback will be facilitated through weekly written exercises, active class participation, and periodic aural assessments.
