By the end of this module, students will:
- have a greater awareness and understanding of the language of documentary Chinese specific to the areas of law and politics;
- have a greater understanding of the broader significance of the particular documents studied, and of the context in which they were produced.
To write Chinese fluently and accurately in all language tasks and, in translation between English and Chinese, to use both languages accurately, with correct spelling and grammar.
- Improved reading comprehension skills of documentary Chinese, specific to the areas of law and politics;
- Improved analytical skills of complex and specialised texts;
Chinese to English translation skills.
The module will be run in student-led seminar-style classes. A variety of contemporary and important texts from the fields of politics and law in China will be chosen - given the contemporary nature of this course, the specifics of individual texts will necessarily vary from year to year.
The classes will consist of close readings of these texts, and discussion of implied meanings and the contexts from which they were produced. Key texts covered will concern either political topics such as China's democracy movement, or recently passed laws and statues.

- Frequent monitoring of translation skills in student-led seminars
- 1 in-class assignment to prepare for unseen translation in week 6. Written feedback is provided.
