Students who fail Japanese 2: Pre-Advanced Communication Skills 1 may continue to Japanese 2: Pre-Advanced Communication Skills 2, but they cannot proceed to Level 3 until they have passed both Japanese 2: Pre-Advanced Communication Skills 1 and 2. MODL9500 or MODL9501

Module summary

This module is for those who have mastered upper-intermediate Japanese. It aims to further develop knowledge and skills in the use and understanding of written and spoken materials on the basis of grammar mastered in EAST2719 Japanese 2: Pre-advanced Japanese skills 1 or equivalent. 

Objectives

To continue Japanese language training to develop students’ language skills to an advanced level that is essential to their Level 3 study, future career and ability to act as cross-cultural intermediaries. The module aims to develop skills: in reading and writing kanji and gain proficiency; in listening to the main points of dialogues, news and other authentic/semi-authentic materials, in reading articles and reports; in writing and speaking Japanese fluently and accurately in all language tasks, presenting clear detailed text/descriptions on a wide range of subjects and express clearly their opinions and thoughts on the topic.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1- Comprehend wide range of texts in Japanese on familiar topics and current affairs within a reasonable time frame without depending too much on a dictionary;
2- Demonstrate various writing skills on familiar topics and current affairs in accordance with the purposes and contexts;
3- Employ English-Japanese translation skills which identify differences in cultural context for precise translation; 
4- Demonstrate fluent aural and oral communication skills in Japanese both in speeches and discussions on familiar topics and current affairs;
5- Demonstrate clarity in phonology, accuracy in advanced grammar, and appropriateness in vocabulary, including the use of honorific language and kanji.

6- Demonstrate cross-cultural communication skills and an awareness of diverse Japanese cultural contexts
