This module is for those who have completed their year abroad in Japan. It aims to further develop both written and spoken communication skills in Japanese based upon the knowledge and skills acquired in Level 1 and Year Abroad. Pre-advanced grammar and vocabulary will be introduced and reinforced through conversation, extensive listening, reading, translation and writing practice.
To continue Japanese language training to develop students’ language skills to a pre-advanced level that is essential to their Level 3 study, future career and ability to act as cross-cultural intermediaries. The module aims to develop skills: in reading and writing kanji and gain proficiency; in listening to the main points of dialogues, news and other authentic/semi-authentic materials, in reading articles and reports; in writing and speaking Japanese fluently and accurately in all language tasks, presenting clear detailed text/descriptions on a wide range of subjects.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1- Comprehend a wide range of texts in Japanese on familiar matters within a reasonable time frame without depending too much on a dictionary;
2- Demonstrate appropriate writing skills on familiar topics in accordance with the purposes and contexts such as writing polite letters and personal statements
3- Demonstrate fluent aural and oral communication skills in Japanese in daily conversations spoken at a natural speed both in formal and informal settings;
4- Demonstrate clarity in phonology, accuracy in pre-advanced grammar, and appropriateness in vocabulary, including the use of honorific language and kanji.
