EAST2180 | An Introduction to Cantonese 1 |
This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module builds on the Cantonese learned in EAST2180. It covers more complicated grammar and vocabulary of Cantonese. Classes include dialogue, role-play, and learning from audiotapes. You will be able to conduct daily conversations in Cantonese at the end of the course. Suitable for non-native speakers of Chinese.
On completion of this module, students should be capable of:
- distinguishing between the pronunciation, tones, vocabulary and grammatical structures of Cantonese and standard (Mandarin) Chinese;
- conducting everyday conversations in Cantonese in a range of practical contexts;
- understanding some basic news and human interest stories;
- reading simple sentences written using common Cantonese vocabulary.
This module builds on the language skills acquired in EAST2180. Further basic grammatical structures and vocabulary are introduced and practiced through situational conversations, role play and the discussion of topics.
