In this module students learn how to read and write Thai script and study the basic structures and vocabulary of modern spoken and written Thai essential for navigating real-life situations. The module also introduces students to Thai social customs, values and behaviour through language study to enhance inter-cultural knowledge and awareness. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module
This module is designed for beginner learners with little or no prior knowledge of the Thai language. The module’s main objective is to enable students to develop a solid foundation of the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing in an interactive and communicative learning environment.
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. Read and write all Thai consonants, vowels and dipthongs.
2. Recognise and use correct Thai pronunciation and apply essential features of Thai grammar, both orally and in writing, utilising the introduced structures.
3. Comprehend passages on everyday topics written in Thai or presented aurally that have been introduced during the course.
4. Engage in culturally appropriate conversations and produce simple, structured pieces of writing about basic everyday topics in Thai script.
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
5. Effectively organise your time independently to consolidate the material covered in class
6. Use digital resources for a range of language learning tasks;
7. Adopt effective and proactive language learning strategies.

Regular weekly written exercises
Class engagement and performance
Regular aural tests
Mid-semester test to give students the chance to practice and receive formative feedback before the final summative written exam.
