Module summary

This module builds upon the basic Japanese language skills developed in EAST1210 (or equivalent), focusing on enhancing the fundamental competencies of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The module aims to provide students with a practical command of the language.

Objectives

The objective of this module is to enhance and extend the foundational language skills acquired in EAST1210 (or equivalent), focusing on the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. It is designed to extend students' understanding and practical command of Basic Japanese in an interactive and communicative learning environment, thereby reinforcing and expanding upon the outcomes achieved in the preceding module.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Comprehend and use a range of basic and more sophisticated grammatical constructions, showing a good command of Japanese sentence structure;
2. Read and translate short texts on a number of topics covered on the module from Japanese into English and vice versa;
3. Comprehend authentic spoken Japanese relating to the topics covered and respond on these topics using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical constructions;
4. Produce structured pieces of writing on a number of topics covered during the semester.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Organise time effectively and work independently to consolidate material covered in class;
6. Show intercultural understanding and awareness of Japanese cultural contexts;
7. Adopt effective and proactive language learning strategies
