Module summary

To understand contemporary Chinese society and culture it is vital to be familiar with its recent history. This module provides an overview of the major events and trends in the political, social, and economic history of modern China, and shows how these have been reflected in literature, cinema and other cultural forms. The lectures introduce the history of China from the start of the 20th century, through to the reform period and present day.

Objectives

This module will:
- Introduce events and trends in the political, social and economic history of modern China, and examine how they have shaped China today.
- Introduce how these trends influenced the main developments of modern Chinese culture in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Proficiency in presenting well-reasoned arguments supported by evidence and engagement in constructive dialogue about the complexities of contemporary China.
2. Identify and articulate the major developments in Chinese culture and society, including shifts in values, beliefs, and artistic expressions, influenced by modern historical events.
3. Integrate insights from political, social, economic, literary, and cinematic perspectives to develop a holistic understanding of modern China.

Skills Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4. analyse primary sources, using them critically as evidence to support own arguments
5. identify and analyse arguments in scholarly literature, evaluating their credibility, and develop own position in response
6. communicate ideas concisely and coherently in writing
