This module will help you to progress from A1 to near A2 according to the CEFR scale in the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) in Chinese. On the completion of this module you will be able to understand simple instructions in Chinese and respond appropriately in everyday situations. You will develop awareness of the Chinese culture and linguistic diversity. This module is designed for students studying Chinese as part of their degree.
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- build on prior basic knowledge of Chinese
- develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary and expressions and a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for that level
- train students to apply these skills in basic written and spoken communication.
- develop students’ interest in the cultures where Chinese is spoken
- develop students’ awareness of Chinese linguistic diversity
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Understand and produce short spoken texts on familiar, everyday topics and respond appropriately in common situations.
2. Read and write the target language script with sufficient accuracy and pace to support basic communication.
3. Use a range of basic grammatical constructions and high-frequency vocabulary to convey and exchange simple ideas in spoken and written form.
4. Recognise language registers in the target-language contexts when communicating.
5. Use context clues to understand unfamiliar language.
6. Use appropriate digital and reference resources to support self-directed learning.

Regular progress will be monitored through students’ engagement with formative activities set on Minerva or through a textbook ahead of each class. Students will receive formative feedback throughout the module to consolidate their learning, prepare for assessments, and encourage autonomous language development.
