Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There is no compensation between elements of summative assessment; each element must be passed. In the event of failure of one or more elements, the module mark will be capped at 40 on successful resit of the failed element(s).

Poster presentation and reflective assignment:
Students will be given verbal and written feedback on the group's performance in the poster presentation. This will be used by students in their summative reflective assignment.

Personal Development Portfolio:
The Personal Development Portfolio is an ongoing, continuous reflective and action planning process which will be reviewed periodically throughout the academic year. Students will receive feedback on specified parts of their reflective activities at key points in the academic year. There will also be space for private reflections which will be reviewed but will not form part of the formal assessment.
Students will be required to reflect on their progress and the feedback they receive and to plan their ongoing personal and professional development. Any areas which have not been satisfactorily reflected on will be identified to allow students to remediate before the end of the academic year.

Students will receive feedback on their performance using a 'not met', 'just met', 'met' and 'exceeds' expectations approach. This will allow students to have insight into how they are meeting expectations and their progress through the academic year.

Poster presentation: This will involve students working as part of a team of peers to present on a given ethical topic area to a panel of IDEA ethics tutors, and School of Dentistry tutors. Students will be expected to demonstrate insight into the application of the ethical topic into professional dental practice. Reflective assignment: This assignment aims to assess students' reflection on their experiences of working as part of a team to prepare and present a poster in relation to a clinical/ professional scenario. Students will be expected to reflect on: - The ethical principles considered as part of the poster topic. - The teamworking and communication challenges in preparing and presenting the poster. Personal Development Portfolio (PDP): The Personal Development Portfolio (PDP) is a pass/ fail element of the Personal and Professional Development 2 module which provides a scaffold for students to demonstrate and record their progress. The PDP continues through the programme with specified requirements in each year. Students will receive feedback on their performance using a 'not met', 'just met', 'met' and 'exceeds' expectations approach. A student must meet expectations across all specified areas of the portfolio to pass the PDP assessment element overall. This ensures that students have met the General Dental Council Safe Practitioner Framework behaviours requirement as they progress through the programme. The four areas of the PDP are: 1. Professional standards and behaviours 2. Ethical principles 3. Learning and development 4. Self-management and wellbeing Progress will be reviewed periodically throughout the academic year and students who have not met expectations in a specified element of the portfolio will be given opportunities to resubmit after receiving feedback at key stages in the academic year. The PDP will comprise the following elements: - Personal reflections and action planning on performance in year 1 outcomes and assessments. - Written submissions in relation to given clinical and non-clinical ethical scenarios. - Personal reflections and action planning on student professional behaviours (including communication skills). - Personal reflections on individual and collaborative learning and working in the clinical skills context. - Personal reflections and action planning on self-management and well-being strategies. - Personal reflection and action planning on development in relation to education capability statements in dentistry. The Personal Development Portfolio may comprise a range of approaches such as written, audio and video formats to support appropriate reflection and action planning across the various aspects of the PDP.
