Objectives

Time is a determining factor within the exploration of the image in contemporary art. Relations between still and moving images are common currency in the theoretical and practical engagement with the cinematic dimension of diverse visual art forms such as video, painting, drawing, photography and installation art.

This module will refer to theoretical texts concerned with time, duration and memory, and will consider these concepts in view of issues of materiality and space in contemporary art. Furthermore, it will engage in a range of artistic case studies to allow for an informed debate of diverse conceptual and visual strategies regarding the notion of time and the image in contemporary art as well as its historical context.

On completion of the module students should be aware of the theoretical and historical context of the concern with time and the image in contemporary art. They will have examined a range of artistic strategies and discussed these in relation to (audio) visual and theoretical implications.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, students will have:
1 an awareness of some of the key theoretical texts and arguments that inform the debate on time and the image in contemporary art.
2 the ability to analyse a range of theoretical texts and to explore their conceptual implications.
3 an understanding of the complexities of different artistic strategies.
4 An increased ability to discuss art works informed by theoretical reflections.

Syllabus

This module examines different contemporary artistic strategies that are involved with time and the image by referring to some of the major debates, theoretical positions and historical implications. Case studies of different artists will provide insights as to the potential of art practice to reflect on time, duration and the image. Minimalism and its implication of duration will provide a historical reference to the contemporary debate.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance at the weekly seminars will be registered. Student understanding will be monitored through class discussions.
A non-assessed student presentation in Week 7.
Feedback of written analysis (summative) and essay abstract (formative) in Week 8.
