This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module aims to equip you with a core understanding of book design for a contemporary art audience. The module will use a historical foundation of the artist’s book as a base to consider innovative and conceptual approaches to book design and making. Practical workshop sessions will apply these methods in a contemporary context. You will be encouraged to engage with a variety of approaches to book design before establishing an original response to the brief. The strengths and weaknesses of the work will be discussed in both group and one-to-one settings. You will learn how to articulate your ideas through presentation and written work. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module
The aim of the module is to equip students with an understanding and appreciation of artist’s book design and production. Its objectives are to:
1. Provide students with key principles, theories and ideas that underpin the artist’s book;
2. Provide book design skills for a range of outcomes;
3. Support students to generate research-informed ideas;
4. Enhance students’ ability to evaluate their work and to articulate conceptual work effectively.
A series of interactive workshops provide students with appropriate practical, research and conceptual skills via a hands-on approach to making and discussion.
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
LO1: Apply principles of an artist’s book design in order to produce books in relation to a brief;
LO2: Apply historical and contemporary knowledge of artists and their work to inform artistic practice;
LO3: Identify a range of creative approaches to artist’s book design
LO4: Critically analyse strengths and weaknesses of the final design;
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
