| DESN1248 | Sustainable Fashion |
This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module builds on the lifecycle concepts introduced at Level 1 and extends student knowledge by considering current and new developments across the lifecycle that could significantly improve the sustainability of fashion products and the industry. The module considers mainstream solutions for sustainability and explores new innovations. The relative merits of these will be assessed to develop critical analysis skills.
The module aims to extend student understanding of the product lifecycle concept for fashion and textile products; to expose students to current industry best practice for process across the product lifecycle; to develop critical analysis skills via the assessment of these best practice approaches. The module will introduce the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and explore new emerging approaches to sustainable fashion.
The module, therefore, provides students with important knowledge and information about product lifecycles and the current approaches being used in the industry and the emerging innovations to improve the sustainability of fashion.
Student research and critical analysis skills are developed by considering these industry practices and new innovations and how these impact on the sustainability of the product while still meeting the functional needs of the consumer.
The module will use the programme’s underlying principles of environmental, social, cultural, and economic framework for the critical analysis activities and deliver these through lectures, seminars, practicals and presentations.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. develop a deeper understanding of the lifecycle processes for sustainable fashion
2. explore current industry practices and new innovations to improve sustainability of the lifecycle
3. identify the relative merits of different sustainability approaches for the product lifecycle
Skills Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4. how to apply effective and objective research using academic and non-academic sources
5. how to apply critical analysis to research that relates research findings to specific contexts and constraints
Details of the syllabus will be provided on the Minerva organisation (or equivalent) for the module.
