Module summary

This module is designed to provide you with opportunities to learn photographic techniques and to develop photographic skills. It will deliver a course of exploration of advanced photographic techniques and ideas, as well as considering the work of cultural commentators when studying photography. Practical workshops will also develop new, and build on, digital image manipulation software skills. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module

Objectives

The primary aim of the module is to develop your existing photographic image making skills and consider more experimental techniques.

1. Learn experimental techniques
2. Develop critical and analytical skills in visual evaluation of your own work and that of others
3. Develop knowledge of significant photographic image makers

Lectures will introduce key principles related to all objectives above Practicals and Seminars will help students develop analysis skills and will provide skills/feedback to enable the development of further photographic skills.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

LO1 Explore a range of practical photographic techniques and skills to create effective and meaningful images.
LO2 Apply knowledge of technical and theoretical photographic principles to inform their photographic image making.
LO3 Critically analyse and assess the aesthetics and function of photographic images.

LO4 Use a range of advanced digital software to manipulate photographs.
LO5 Present photographic research and analysis through clear, professional visual and written communication

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback will be delivered via group and individual discussions at several points during the semester in the practical sessions and the seminars and via a series of photographic tasks set during the module.
