The module provides students with a foundational understanding of photographic principles. It involves the practical application of photographic skills in the making of photographic images. It will also highlight key issues related to digital image quality and reproduction as well as concept generation, evaluation, and application. The module also introduces students to industry-standard image manipulation software.
This module aims to equip students with knowledge of photographic principles and techniques as well as skills in the generation of visual concepts.
The objectives are;
1) to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of photography including exposure, use of colour, focus, and image quality.
2) to provide key skills in the use of industry-standard image manipulation software
3) to support students to generate and evaluate a range of concepts in response to a photographic brief.
Learning activities are varied. To achieve objective 1, students will produce and evaluate photographs informed by a series of seminars and lectures.
To achieve objective 2, practical seminars and learning support material will demonstrate how best to use relevant image manipulation software.
To achieve objective 3, students will engage in seminars and independently to generate and communicate a range of concepts responding to set photographic briefs.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. apply the fundamental concepts and practical techniques of photography
2. assess the need or otherwise for manipulation of an existing photographic image.
3. generate and compare the appropriateness of different concepts to the making of a photographic image.
Skills Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
4. apply technical skills in creating photographic images.
5. Apply effective written communication skills to present ideas.

Formative feedback will be available in person in a group context in at least two seminar sessions at key points in the semester ahead of the formative submissions.
