This module covers how AI techniques and principles from biological systems can be applied to robots to control behaviour and sense environments. You will develop an understanding of the theoretical problems inherent in robotics and use pre-built robots to design, implement and test different control and perceptual systems.
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- understand the fundamental concepts in modern robotics, including robot navigation and manipulation.
- understand the fundamental algorithms used on modern robots.
- understand the structure of software systems used on modern robots.
- understand the challenges associated with building the intelligent robots of the future.
-critically discuss ethical issues involved in the application of modern robotics
-demonstrate experience of collaborative work that develops biologically inspired solutions to practical problems.
-understand fundamental principles of neural and evolutionary computing and their application to adaptive control
-understand the principal ideas and techniques of computer vision;
-understand algorithms that are based on cooperative behaviour of distributed systems with no, or little central control;
On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:
-understand and demonstrate coherent and detailed subject knowledge and professional competencies some of which will be informed by recent research/scholarship in the discipline;
-deploy accurately standard techniques of analysis and enquiry within the discipline;
-demonstrate a conceptual understanding which enables the development and sustaining of an argument;
-describe and comment on particular aspects of recent research and/or scholarship;
-appreciate the uncertainty, ambiguity and limitations of knowledge in the discipline;
-make appropriate use of scholarly reviews and primary sources;
-apply their knowledge and understanding in order to initiate and carry out an extended piece of work or project;

Robotic navigation and localization; Robot arm kinematics; Robot motion planning; Robot software (simulations; robot middleware; control algorithms); Robot ethics: concerns about control, deception, privacy and loss of human contact
Perception & Language:
Topics selected from:
Signal Processing, Sensors, Geometry of projection and co-ordinate transformations; Binocular and motion stereo; Surface reconstruction; Recognising and tracking objects; Localisation and Mapping
Communication and Language - introduction to linguistic theory and terminology. Algorithms and techniques for computer-assisted speech/text processing.
Planning and Control
Topics selected from:
Representation of knowledge of actions and their effect on the world, and how to construct plans to achieve goal states; path planning.
Multi agent systems: Examples of cooperative phenomena in nature; concepts such as emergence, self-organisation and embodiment; algorithms for swarm intelligence; multi agent communications.
