COMM1860 | Photographic Practices |
This module is not approved as a discovery module
This module is designed to bring the theory and practice of photography together, via research and creative experimentation, alongside critical and reflective writing. This will prepare you for more independent working at level 3. Together with study of the principles of photographic practice, history and theory, you will develop your own technical knowledge and creative approaches to the medium, through the development of a negotiated photography brief.
The module aims to give you experience of developing a photography project, informed by relevant research, photography theory and creative experimentation, in preparation for your final year project. You will learn about the history and theory of photography, while examining the
relationships between critical ideas and photographic practice. Through making critically-informed images, you will gain experience of practice as a research method, critical analysis and self-reflection, alongside developing your creative and technical photography skills.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Plan and execute a critically-informed and research-led photography project
2. Situate and contextualise photography within critical themes, relevant theory, history and genre
3. Discuss and appraise photography theory, using it to underpin creative approaches
4. Apply practical photography skills and use of technology in the production of new images
