Module summary

This module is designed to facilitate the acquisition of basic skills in moving image production relevant to all types of audio-visual output, including documentary, drama, journalism and web-based delivery. Understanding the language and technology behind communicating with images, motion sequences, words, music and sounds through computers is becoming imperative in today’s society. This module aims to equip students with professionally-orientated basic skills required for effective communication through audio-visual media.

Objectives

This module aims to:-
-provide a basic grounding in the language, conventions, techniques and practices of micro-budget, mini-crew digital short video production through weekly practical workshops
-equip students with the skills needed to work with creative clarity and technical efficiency within a small production team, whilst in charge of at least one key production element as part of their assessment.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Explain the basic grammar of shooting and editing factual and fictional sequences.
2. Identify and engage with the key stages of video pre-production, production and post-production - conceptual, development, planning and execution.
3. Recall the basic requirements of health & safety, production logging and permissions.


On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:

5. Teamwork & Collaboration Skills: the ability to plan, manage and communicate with other members of a team throughout the stages of producing an audio-visual output.
6. Decision making: The ability to make decisions based on team priorities, health and safety requirements and assignment briefs.
7. Technical Skills: The ability to record sound, edit video and engage in necessary post-production work.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students are asked to upload a 5 shot, 30-60 second video narrative sequence to a set brief covering narrative content and technical specification. This is assessed formatively in advance of the final project submission, with individual feedback tutorials offered.
