COMM1330 Camera and Editing for Journalists

Having learned how to find news stories in Introduction to Journalism Skills, on this module students learn how to tell news stories. They gain an understanding of journalistic storytelling through narrative techniques and media production skills, combining images, sounds and text to produce a news report. They maximise this experiential learning by critically reflecting on their work, establishing action points that will benefit their future practice and studies.
The module aims to teach students how to take the information they have gathered through investigating a factual story and turn it into a multimedia news report.
In journalism workshops students will:
- Further their ability to find, research, and develop news stories.
- Learn how to write professionally for a news journalism audience.
- Plan the gathering of a news report, deciding what media to capture and who they need to interview.
- Develop the storytelling abilities required for multimedia reporting.
- Learn to critically reflect on their experience of journalism practice.
In production practicals students will:
- Learn how to use mobile journalism equipment for visual and audio recording.
- Acquire the camera skills needed to gather video sequences and still images.
- Learn how to set up and record video and audio interviews.
- Use editing software to select and order clips and sequences to form a narrative.
- Learn how to layout, format and structure a multimedia story for a digital platform.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Apply the fundamental concepts, practical competencies and techniques of journalism.
2. Identify, research and develop news stories suitable for multimedia production.
3. Produce news content using audio, video and text.
4. Reflect on and analyse their experience of professional journalism practice.
Skills Learning Outcomes
1. Demonstrate proficiency in filming video and writing news copy., using appropriate software.
2. Communicate professionally for a public audience, using interpersonal skills to create relationships with people outside of the University.
3. Reflect on the importance of professional ethics.

Students will be set tasks within their practicals and workshops relating to the skills and understanding they have been taught. Some activities will be completed in their private study time and, in all cases, students will receive formative verbal or written feedback on areas of achievement and improvement.
