This module is not approved as a discovery module
The major dissertation requires the student to design their own 12,000-word project on any topic, subject to approval from a potential supervisor and the module coordinator.
- To provide students with the opportunity to explore a chosen topic in Classics or Classical Civilisation independently and in depth.
- To give students experience in the planning and execution of a very substantial independent research project.
Students completing this module are expected to have acquired:
- a greatly enhanced knowledge of their chosen topic;
- an understanding of the methodological issues and problems involved in the study of their chosen topic.
On successful completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
- demonstrate a range of subject-specific skills, including an ability to analyse critically various forms of primary evidence.
- demonstrate a range of transferable skills, including written expression, the organisation of personal study, and use of printed and online information sources.
Directed reading for an approved topic in Classics or Classical Civilisation.

Reading/online research (as appropriate to the chosen topic) + writing up.
Contact with supervisor throughout the year. Students will receive a total of 4 hours' one-to-one supervision, distributed throughout the year by arrangement with their supervisor. Submission of 1,000-word plan in December and draft chapter (or equivalent) before the Easter vacation.
