None. Students who have GCSE, AS-level, A-level, or equivalent in Latin may NOT take this module.
This module is approved as a discovery module
This module introduces the Latin language from a complete beginners level. It is suitable for those with no prior knowledge of Latin, but also for those with a little prior experience but no formal qualification. It will use an introductory textbook to teach grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and translation.
The module is designed to provide a solid basis in knowledge of beginners level Latin language – vocabulary, grammar, and syntax – so that students can translate and answer comprehension questions on passages of adapted Latin writing, as well as understanding and using grammar and syntax in translating short sentences from English into Latin. It will provide a foundation for those who wish to take the acquisition of the language further to intermediate level.
Students completing this module will have acquired:
- a knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and easier syntactical constructions, as appropriate to a beginners level course
- an ability to conjugate regular and some important irregular verbs in the most commonly used tenses, voices, and moods, and to decline regular and some important irregular nouns and adjectives
- an ability to understand and translate into English adapted Latin passages, with the aid of vocabulary and grammar/syntax notes
- an ability to translate simple sentences from English into Latin
- an appreciation of the Latin roots of many English words
A range of subject-specific skills including the ability to translate simple passages of Latin, to recognise and apply correctly grammatical and syntactical rules in translating or analysing clauses and simple sentences, and to conjugate and decline regular and some important irregular verbs, nouns, and adjectives.
The module involves using a textbook designed for ab initio learners of Latin, acquiring knowledge of vocabulary, grammar and initial syntax. It will include grammar exercises, translation of short sentences from Latin to English and English to Latin, and translation of beginners level passages from Latin to English. The module is worth 20 credits and consists of 2 classes per week through semesters 1 and 2.
