A critical investigation of novel and unconventional construction methods
Students will learn about a variety of non-traditional construction approaches and techniques, their origins and rationales.
Critical analysis of their application and aims will be made in the context of the wider construction industry
Knowledge and understanding will allow students to make evaluations of the effectiveness of different construction approaches.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
ARB Outcomes are shown in brackets: (XXX)
Students will show critical understanding of
1. How diverse global, cultural, social, technological, economic factors and building technology influence aspects of architecture and urban design. (CK1)
2. The principles of building construction, services, structure, materials use, assembly and manufacture. (CK5)
3. The principles required to ensure that buildings are safe to construct, inhabit, use and maintain, refurbish, re-use and deconstruct. (CK7)
4. Strategies for structure, construction technology, materials, services, ventilation, thermal environment and lighting and acoustics that are appropriate to a project’s brief and context. (D5)
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
a. Academic skills in collection, analysis evaluation and synthesis of data sources.
b. Digital skills to assemble, collate and organise information in technical and graphic communication
c. Identification of key issues within a diverse set of contexts and ability to develop themes from these.
d. Team and individual working showing initiative and collaboration
The module will examine current and past methodologies and techniques for non-traditional construction in a variety of contexts, including prefabrication and off-site manufacturing, as well as some more experimental techniques such as on site 3d printing, innovative materials and systems.
Theoretical issues related to manufacturing and procurement policy and practice will be considered as a critical context for current and past initiatives.
