Module summary

This module encompasses the summative assessment of the Civil Engineering Reflective portfolio. The portfolio is the primary way the AHEP4 Learning Outcome C18 is met (Plan and record self-learning and development as the foundation for lifelong learning/CPD), which all students must demonstrate to be awarded an accredited degree. Students need to evidence competency in maintaining a reflective portfolio that shows commitment to continuous/lifelong learning, an important attribute for all Civil and Architectural Engineers and Architects. Students are required to actively plan and document their personal and professional growth via the portfolio. The portfolio will also serve as the groundwork for future Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities after graduation. During level 2 and semester 1 of level 3, students develop their reflective portfolio (which builds on the foundational work in their level 1 reflective portfolio). The module is a pass/fail.

Objectives

Maintain a reflective portfolio that shows commitment to continuous learning.

Actively plan and document personal and professional growth via a digital portfolio

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1) Create and maintain a reflective portfolio that documents skill development and professional growth, supporting lifelong learning/CPD

2) Demonstrate the ability to plan and manage personal and professional development by identifying learning needs and setting goals aligned with individual academic and/or career aspirations.

3) Critically reflect on academic, professional, and personal experiences and explain how reflective practice contributes to various engineering practices in civil and architectural contexts

4) Engage proactively with feedback (e.g. act on feedback from tutors, peers) and self-evaluation to enhance the quality of portfolio entries.

Upon successful completion of this module, the following Engineering Council Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP) learning outcome descriptor (fourth edition) is satisfied:

Plan and record self-learning and improve performance, as the foundation for lifelong learning/CPD [C18]

The skills learning outcomes are embedded within and assessed through the module learning outcomes via the reflective ePortfolio.

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Apply reflective and critical academic skills to articulate learning and development clearly and coherently within a structured portfolio [assessed through LO1, LO3]

2. Use digital tools effectively to create, manage, and present a professional ePortfolio, demonstrating appropriate digital communication and digital identity [assessed through LO1, LO4]

3. Demonstrate the development and application of discipline-specific technical skills by selecting and reflecting on relevant civil engineering/architecture learning and outputs [assessed through LO1, LO3]

4. Demonstrate self-awareness, adaptability, and initiative by setting development goals, monitoring progress, and responding constructively to challenges and feedback [assessed through LO2, LO4]

Syllabus

Maintain a reflective digital portfolio (e.g. on Pebblepad)
