Module summary

Students will (i) develop key laboratory skills to be able to perform laboratory-based research, (ii) perform a review of the scientific literature in a particular area of research, and (iii) acquire, develop and apply research and evaluation skills by undertaking short projects. The module is designed to incorporate key requirements as outlined by the RSC in accreditation of chemistry degree programmes.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes:

1. Undertake advanced experimental work, with due attention to safety, in the chemical laboratory. Manipulate advanced apparatus and record data for subsequent analysis. Synthesize molecules of structural complexity. Determine structure using spectroscopic data.

2. Select, examine and critique a significant body of research literature and other sources of information, citing and referencing the sources used. Use the literature to maintain currency of knowledge, extend learning and support the development of solutions to specified problems.

3. Complete independent open-ended investigative work through a project relevant to chemistry, involving data collection and analysis and interpret the information within the context of current knowledge.

Skills outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills :
a. Act professionally and with integrity, with due regard for legal, ethical and societal responsibilities, modelling good practice that promotes positive perceptions of chemistry and chemists .
b. Work co-operatively with others as part of a significant project .
c. Communicate effectively using written, oral and other presentation methods, selecting appropriate content, media and methods for the audience, purpose and subject .
d. Plan and manage work in an adaptive and reflexive manner.
e. Solve complex unknown problems. Choose actions based on own data and incomplete information. Critically analyse own results, as well as methodology, results and conclusions produced by others e.g. via critique of research papers
